Fortress of Fun, Crimea, Russia

For protection from nomads at the foot of the mountain in the Middle Ages the fortress of Fun was built. The so-called Crimean Greeks and the mountain itself ("Smoky"). The fortress and the church are partially restored, they also go on excursions when they visit the Valley of Ghosts. Through the gates of the fortress there was a road from the steppe to the South shore, arrows and stones flew to the enemies from these walls.
But the nomads were torn south, to the riches of the legendary, lost in time country of Dory. Her cards have not reached us, but they assume that from the north this country was fenced with stone walls closing the passes. If the assumption is true, the Fortress of Fun could be one of the main outposts of this mysterious country of the Crimean Middle Ages. Probably that border was much more important than many modern ones: in the south - the sea, gardens, life, and from the north, from the pass, the fogs float, the cold wind blows, riders on hot steppe horses lie ... Not to protect their houses, but just for Pleasure we climb Demerdzhi, study the fortress, breathe in the aromas of mountain grasses, and even the hard life for the Middle Ages appears before us tempting, full of poetry, legendary.

The country of Dori is mentioned in the treatise "On the Buildings" of Procopius of Caesarea (6th century): "Here, on this coast, there is a country or region named Dori, where from ancient times there live Goths who did not follow Theodoric heading to Italy. They voluntarily stayed here and in my time were in alliance with the Romans ... "
